The Treatment of Unicameral Bone Cyst by Topical Injection of Methylrednilolone Acetate

Abstract
Unicameral bone cyst is a benign neoplasm arising frequently on the metaphyseal area of long bone in childhood. The pathogenesis is not yet known and the variable surgical methods have been reported. Regardless the variable techniques have been
performed, many problems have been experienced.
In 1979, Scaglietti introduced method of steroid injection which has been reported to be excellent result. We have treated 17 cases of simple bone cyst by topical injection of methylprednisolone acetate in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at
College
of Medicine Hanyang University, from January, 1982 to December, 1990.
@ES The mean follow-up period was 3 year 5 months, and the results were as follows:
@EN 1. The average age of the patients was 9.6 years, from 4 years to 13 years, and 13 cases were male and 4 cases, female.
2. 9 cases of the unicameral bone cyst were located in proximal humerus, 7 cases in proximal femur, and 1 case in distal femur. There were 10 active cysts and 7 latent cysts.
3. The most common cause to visit the clinic was pathologic fracture (11 cases). 9 cases of pathologic fracture were found in proximal humerus, 2 cases in proximal femur.
4. The results of topical injection of methylprednisolone acetate were as follows: Healed was 10 cases, improved 5 cases, incomplete obliteration 1 case, and recurred 1 case.
5. More than 10 years of age or the presence of pathologic fracture were favorable with healing, but it was not statistically significant. And bone involvement, location with respect to the growth plate, and cyst size did not seem to influence
the
outcome of treatment.
